In this article the Passimeter and Bore meter which were intended to measure either the depth or width of a bored area of a given tool.

Ernst Abbe and the (Zeiss) Foundation (History)

The author shows that the prime movement to create the modern firm of Carl Zeiss was in large part to the efforts of Dr. Ernst Abbe who accomplished this legally and financially. He was the financial instrument to gain control of the former family enterprise and convert it into a foundation for business which brought employee benefits and security to the employees and the community of Jena which was the seat of the business. It was a monumental undertaking both legally and financially and left the firm in control of not- interested parties but also the community and the university,
