Kiev Cameras

An early discussion by the first historian to develop the history of the Contax and associated cameras about the Kiev cameras that were brought to Ukraine when it was part of the USSR. It was the intention of the Russian government to take the Contax camera and make it a Russian based product as soon as possible after the war.

A retired VEB Carl Zeiss Jena worker relates his experiences as a constructor of the Contax reverse engineered camera in Jena for placement in Kiev in 1947 but the firm still managed to manufacture the Jena Contaxes from 1947 – 1950 in order to bring in needed currency to rebuilt the firm.

The author reviews a long conversation with retired Carl Zeiss Jena engineer, Wolfgang Hahn. Hahn was the leader of the project to build the workshop in Kiev and teach the workers in Ukraine the methods to build the former Contax camera. He left a year before the assembly line that pre-dated the Jena Contax was taken in September 1947.

Some preliminary research into the Contax situation after WOrld War II after a trip to Dresden and Jena. Some assumptions are valid but would be refined in later publication with interviews with workers from post war Jena with regard to this subject.
